Hi Nancy,

Still an outstanding question is what were the conductor's objections to
using C clarinet, which initiated the problem you described in your first
note on the subject?

Did he or she object to the character of sound produced by the C clarinets?

Did he or she believe that no useful purpose was achieved by the use of the
C clarinets?

Did he or she believe that Beethoven was wrong in his selection of C
clarinets?

Is the conductor more enamored of the sound of a B-flat or even A clarinet
than the sound of a C clarinet?

Of course, you are not in a position to challenge the decision of the
conductor during the rehearsal, but it would be of value to know exactly
what went through that conductor's mind. Why not ask privately?

If I were there I would have the conductor's head on a spike.

Many thanks to all of the folks who stepped up to help me with the Beethoven
9.
The transposed parts are to be posted on Woodwind.Org by Karl Krelove, and
available to all.
