My approach (which I never got around to doing) was going to be MIDI
excerpts and the sheet music clarinet part of that excerpt. When
Pierre Schwob's site was free (Classical MIDI Archives), getting into
this project would have been just about as close to dead simple as it
will ever be. I suppose that there are classical "fake books" around
and that would be a start because at least it would give one a list
of pieces and where in the piece the solo occurs. Then I would have
searched for the MIDI file of the part at Pierre's site and
downloaded it, fiddled around a bit until I had trimmed it down to a
segment which includes the solo and made sure that the clarinet sheet
music would match. In terms of playback, I wouldn't work with
anything but MIDI files because sequence editing is simple, tracks
can be muted and it is easy to change the tempo on playback.

For pieces not in the fake book, it would be matter of hearing
something played and deciding that it would be the next piece on
one's agenda. The Classic Arts Showcase uses a theme which I think
is in a ballet by Adolphe Adam, "Giselle", I think, and every time I
hear it, I say to myself, "One of these days, one of these days. . ."

That's my 2 cents worth.
