Here's another quick thing to do to see if it's the reed you're using: is
the tip of the reed flat or ruffled after it's been moistened? If it's
ruffled, try placing the end of the reed on the flat lay of the mouthpiece, cover
the end gently with your thumb, but make sure you're putting pressure on the
reed enough so it doesn't move or get chipped, etc. Gently snap the reed
anywhere on the thick end hanging off the mouthpiece. Like you're "tapping down"
something in a vial. That should flatten out the ruffles. Put the reed up
to the light also to see if there are hairline cracks parallel to the grain
of the reed, in which case it's probably dead anyway. Might work -- might
not, but worth a try.
