This is such an interesting thread that I can't understand why it has
not come up before. I have asked the pianist Anthony Hewitt, who is
rather an authority on Schumann, what is his approach to this
problem; after all the works are duos and we probably have enough
clarinettists to give a range of opinions from that point of view,
whilst when I was struggling with the piano part to accompany some of
my pupils I think I was too busy trying to play ANY approximation to
what was written to concern myself with the subtleties. Have we
anyone on this site who has played the piano part at concert standard
and feels able to comment.
