I realize you are probably asking about classical recordings, but seeing as=
someone has mentioned jazz - and just to spread the discussion - the clari=
net didn't entirely die out as a jazz instrument. Of course Buddy Defranco =
and Eddie Daniels are absolutely stunning clarinet players, but there are m=
any other fine jazz and contemporary musicians out there who have explored =
the clarinet in different ways, producing sounds that aren't necessarily cl=
ean and beautiful, but which use many of the noises that, as a relative beg=
inner, you might occasionally have no trouble in making ! That's an odd thi=
ng - that we spend so much time eliminating these sounds from our technique=
(me included) and then, if interested in that kind of music, might spend e=
xtra time trying to master bringing them back. I suppose I can understand, =
but it's odd.
Anyway - they seem to be mainly European, even if the heritage may have pas=
sed though from Jimmy Guiffre and Eric Dolphy - but you might like to chec=
k out: Theo Jorgensmann (plays a straight bassett clarinet - there's an ext=
ra thread hanging there, no doubt), Michel Portal, Louis Sclavis, Peter Bro=
tzman, Gabriele Mirabassi, John Carter (an American musician now deceased),=
Alex Ward in the UK - the Klezmer guys too - David Krakauer, for instance=
, or Turkish players like H=FCsn=FC =AAenlendirici. I'm sure others can add=
to the list, but all of them delve into unconventional techniques (althoug=
h I suppose you could argue that Klezmer and ethnic clarinet are part of a =
'different' convention rather than unconventional).
I hope I will have occasion to mention Theo Jorgensmann again, because I be=
lieve he is coming to make his first ever UK appearance in the UK in early =
July.

I like Sharon Kam (as well as the already-mentioned Robert Marcellus and
Sabine Meyer). Also, Harold Wright had some recital cds. Don't want to
start anything with this suggestion, but I also enjoy Reginald Kell. For
jazz, I love Buddy Defranco.
And of course, Sean Osborn's Rose Etudes :)
