Hi.
We all have our favourites, but do try and get several styles,
including some you personally dislike. I think you should consider
the Kell recording of both works and also the Bernard Walton version
of the Concerto, both available from Testament; their website is
testament.co.uk I think but Google will direct you.
I'd also want the Alan Hacker version of the quintet, played on
basset clarinet. (Amon Ra recordings), and the Ottensamer/Vienna
version of the Concerto (Naxos).
Surely too you want recordings of the Kegelstatt trio and the Piano
and wind quintet. I like the Gieseking/Philharmonia recording (also
Testament - I have no connection with them honestly!) but the Previn/
Vienna one (Telarc) is also very good.
Finally you should have a good French performance but I can't think
of one that is still available.
There are several good modern American performances of all the works;
I was very impressed by the Sabine Meyer version but these I have
suggested will all give you a different view of the works. I want to
get myself the quintet performed by Josef Balogh as I admire his
work greatly and he will give yet another slant on the work.
