Hitherto there is no known recording of the Robert Kahn Quintet. I supplied
the music of his Trio op 45 (cl vc pf) to players in Spain, where they
recorded it privately. His Serenade op 73 has been recorded in Germany (cl
vc pf) and in the UK (ob hn pf). The Kahn Trio is a good match for the
Fruhling. A copy of the Weingartner CD (no phantom) was given by Kazuko
Ninomiya to Pamela Weston a decade ago. I'd entirely agree that it would be
almost impossible for me to find, since I am unable to search the Internet
in Japanese (Kanji, Hiragana or Katakana) and would not have thought of
doing so. Would you like to hear it?
Other works for cl vn va vc pf, include Schmidt (2) several recordings,
Theodore Dubois, for oboe with clarinet alternative in the edition at
Eastman-Rochester, recorded with oboe in Canada, Josef Labor recorded in
USA, Peter Con (Slovakia, copy in Arizona State University Library) not
recorded. Anton Eberl's attractive Quintet (cl 2va vc pf) has been recorded
in Germany and richly reserves a modern edition. He wrote a second quintet
for oboe, strings and piano.
Leading the group of quintets with clarinet and horn, you have Fibich,
several recordings, and I have sometimes played it with viola in place of
horn, the viola part is in the Supraphon edition, followed by Goedike
(Russian) and Baussnern (Romanian/German), neither recorded, and an early
work by Dunhill (recorded in UK). The Trio by Baussnern (cl vn pf) is
another forgotten gem. Using the IMC edition #945 of Mozart's K 452 for 2vn
va vc pf, it is possible to re-instate the clarinet, using the original
clarinet part in the second violin position, with minor adjustments where
the editor has switched parts round. This is just a starting point.
