In New York, for the solo festival competition (NYSSMA), 2 copies of a piece
are required, one for the performer and one for the adjudicator.

However, many elementary students play the solo part while providing just
the piano accompaniment part for the judge, saving the parents the cost of
buying 2 sets of music.

On the upper level, when an accompanist is used, 2 complete
copies(piano/clarinet) are needed. Yes, it can get a bit pricey with the
more expensive pieces.

The only 2 exceptions to this policy are:

1. When a work listed in the manual is suddenly out of print. Then, a Xerox
copy is permitted along with a letter from the publisher stating that fact.

2. When the solo has been ordered and has not arrived in time. Then, a
letter from the music retailer must be provided.
