Rentals are a point of irritation for me also, and not only because I
can't make any money off of them.
I love Kurt Weill's music and was recently looking at the options for
The Threepenny Opera. There is an arrangement made by Kurt Weill himself
for "wind orchestra." This is a small ensemble that bears some
relationship to the original orchestration. The score is available
($59.95) but the parts are a rental.
I think that if this was available for sale they could sell 500 copies
in 10 years to universities and colleges in the US alone. The copyright
clock is ticking on this one, too. The original version was written in
1928 and Weill died in 1950, so this may already be in the public domain
in Canada and other countries with a shorter term than the US an Europe.
I can claim one small success in the battle against rentals. I was able
to persuade Carl Fischer to make Prelude, Blues and Finale for Two
Clarinets in A (or Clarinet in A and Viola) and Piano by Elie
Siegmeister available. They chose to make it an expensive ($74.50) print
on demand publication but this still makes it possible for colleges to
buy it and perform it every few years without additional hassles.
