But seriously, an undergraduate degree gives you some basic training but
does not allow you to say you are a scientist or a lawyer or whatever. It
allows you to start the process, which by further training such as a PhD (or
similar) AND the demonstration that you can work effectively and
innovatively on your own for some years after, allows you to be considered
seriously as a scientist or whatever. There are loads of PhDs about who
earned that qualification but are quite unable to perform at the 'original
scientist' (engineer, lawyer, physician, etc) level. I fell asleep
interviewing too many of them for jobs in both university and industry.

In old-fashioned terms: undergraduate degree = apprentice, PhD (or
equivalent eg law school training) = journeyman, 5 - 10 years proving
yourself in professional activity = master.

So let's not get hung up over undergraduate qualifications. They do not
allow you to pontificate with credibility.
