It is usual and IMO much better to do an overlap joint. For a butt joint you have to be exactly accurate in advance with the length of the cork. It is pretty much impossible to do this perfect so the cork is either other tension to unglue itself or stretched (which might not be possible because it's already glued, so won't stretch).

With the overlap joint it becomes perfect automatially. You bevel only the underside, then the cork, which is a little too long, glues over it. Then you remove the extra. I do most of the shaping of the cork before gluing it which is faster/safer.

Re some other comments, I've found it is best to use contact glue for this. It will last considerably longer than the cork itself anyway. I've tried many types until I found an excellent one which also dries fast (some contact glues take even 15 mintues or more before you can glue the pieces).

Also re: the thickness of the cork that was mentioned in one post. Too thick cork is not a good idea because it will compress and not have enough support relatively fast, since it is a relatively squishy material. This happens for the same reason that natural cork is also so good for tenons. In this case, when a thick cork is needed (because of the tenon and socket sizes) it is possible to glue first a thin tenon rubber cork (aka tech cork, aka gumi cork, etc.) and then glue a nomral thickness of tenon cork above it.

In the replacement of a cork for a tenon, which is the more effective cork
preparation method, butt joint or overlap joint? I have heard reports on both
types, but I have no ability to discern which of the two methods is superior.
