I would be interested to hear from anyone who has views on the Clarinet
Sonatas by Edward Burlinghame Hill (1927) and Leo Sowerby (1938), as yet not
heard or seen, except for annotations by Maurice Hinson, Arthur Cohn and
Burnet Tuthill. The Hill Sonata does not appear to be available for
purchase, though locatable in US libraries using the 'Worldcat' database. I
have been looking for high quality works for clarinet and piano by American
or US-domiciled composers. The choice by leading American clarinettists, who
have recorded recitals with piano, (LP era included), appears to be
restricted to a small handful of their countrymen's works, not counting
those by living composers, recorded once, usually for the benefit of the
composers. Does this suggest (please forgive me) a shortage or conservatism?
Many thanks.
