I am pretty sure you are OK in the EU as well, where anything published
whose author/composer has been dead for more than 70 years is public domain.

There are exceptions in some (not all) EU countries including UK for
'orphan' manuscripts that have never been published. These belong to their
owner and are not public domain. Copyright in the printed version belongs to
the first person to publish them and lasts till 70 years after the death of
the first publisher. Hence the difficulty in seeing some early manuscripts,
as owners are paranoid that they will lose their rights.

I had an amusing example recently, at the British Library. I wanted copies
of some pages of a book of about 1780 by Domenico Corelli, a manual for
singers. It had been published in facsimile form about 10 years ago. I went
to the music librarian for the required permission to copy, saying 'I
suppose you won't let me copy this as it's a recently published facsimile'.
He responded 'Quite correct. But why don't you use the original, we have it
downstairs!'
