The arpeggione is (or was) a six string cello-like instrument with=20
frets (not at all related to the glass armonica). Schubert's famous=20
sonata for the arpeggione is only played played today in transcription,=20
mostly by cellists, sometimes on clarinet (eg Bellison made an=20
arrangement).
The glass armonica was used by Mozart several times. most notably in a=20
late quintet (K. 617) along with flute, oboe, viola and cello. Richard=20
Strauss used it in the large orchestra for his opera "Die Frau ohne=20
Schatten." I speculate that this opera is the only musical composition=20
in which the glass armonica and the basset horn make a joint=20
appearance. Beethoven may also have dabbled with it.
As to current performances the glass armonica is still alive. Cecilia=20
Bauer, who also plays celesta with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra,=20
used the glass armonica in performances recently of Donizetti's Lucia=20
