Bill,

Melodious and Progressive Studies from Andersen, Gariboldi, Koehler and Terschak for Flute Revised by Robert Cavally. Vol I and II Southern Music.

Actually, when I forget my flute music, I often use the 27 Virtuoso Studies by L Bassi, published for sax/oboe.

Herbert L Clarke raided the flute and violin books extensively for cornet. Oboe and sax books are interchangeable. Freely using trumpet etude books like the Sachse is fine for beginning and intermediate students. Whenever I find large piles of music for sale I buy all the etude books for any instrument, and then play through to see if this is a book that will work well for any of the woodwinds or brasses.

Both Carl Leach and Claude Gordon, who taught in our stores used the Technique of Saxophone Vol I by Joe Viola as advanced velocity studies for trumpet. Show that to your trumpet playing friends!!

The best beginning etude book I have ever found for flute or oboe was written by Nilo Hovey. It is called - The First Book of Practical Studies for Saxophone. This book lays in a perfect area for developing Taffanels embouchure. It really helps students learn to reach forward slightly as they go up. It is also a great book to use to re-train players, especially sax players, that have been taught to pull the corners back. Since the excercises are easy, if taken slowly, they develop the embouchure gradually and logically, curing the dead-end of corners pulled back.

Kurt
