Subj: [kl] TV Audio-Video Synchronization
Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 14:45:18 -0500

I noticed some sync problems during the NBC coverage that I watched for most
of the day. Is there a not-too-technical explanation for these audio-video
sync problems? Is it more of a problem when telecasting from a remote
location than from a studio? Does it originate in the onsite equipment at
the remote location or does something in the way it's all processed
introduce a lag in one component or the other?

Seems I've been noticing more of these problems as more stations have gone
digital. Or am I imagining it?

I would not use finger sync as a deciding factor. There were major sync
issues with the broadcast on at least one network (ABC) that I was watching.
At one point towards the beginning of the broadcast, there was close to a
half of a second difference. Then, they would cut away to crowd shots and
when they would return, the sync was close. However, this scene repeated
itself no less than 6 times in the first 20 minutes or so. It became so
distracting for me that I changed channels. When I switched to NBC, the
feed was much better and stayed in sync.
