Hi Folks.
I trust you all that there were microphones. Maybe I just not saw. OK.
But the matter of the fingerings and noise I am still defending my point =
of
view, since the fingerings of the cello didn`t corresponding to the =
music:
even with a delay. Just my feeling...

Best,

Fernando

Sorry, the microphones were quite definitely there. It did not sound =
like
it was pre-recorded and played in sync. There were too many issues with =
the
recording and the sync to the fingers from what I saw on the NBC feed =
was
perfect.

If you care, there were 2 microphones visible through much of the
performance, they were just positioned very low. One was a Neumann TLM =
170
that looked like it was in front of the cello and the other was an
Earthworks mic of some sort (couldn't identify a model) likely in front =
of
the violin. Couldn't tell what was in front of the clarinet. The
instruments were mic'd very closely and they used a LOT of reverb to try =
to
make it sound like an ensemble. IMO, the piano balance was also quite =
low
for that ensemble.

Also as an FYI, just because you think you don't see microphones, it =
does
not mean that they are not there. Today, microphone technology has =
changed
to the point where there are some very good sounding microphones that =
can
mount on an instrument and are about the size of a match head. I've =
been
known to mic entire string sections with these mics and have had great =
sound
that has thrilled clients. I have even used similar microphones to mic =
a
clarinet (usually mounted on the performers chest- I can thank Richard
Stoltzman for that suggestion as he was the first that required that in =
a
show).

Also, it is not an unknown thing in situations where video is used to
position microphones outside of the shot or the view of the camera. In =
this
case, they didn't appear to use them, but several microphone =
manufacturers
(notably Schoeps, Sennheiser, DPA and Neumann) have some very good =
sounding
setups where the capsule of a small microphone is removed and placed =
using
any one of a series of attachments in a way that is very low profile. =
Think
Academy Awards podium or the three tenors. In both cases, you had =
multiple
microphones with a very low profile that are very high quality.

I would not use finger sync as a deciding factor. There were major sync
issues with the broadcast on at least one network (ABC) that I was =
watching.
At one point towards the beginning of the broadcast, there was close to =
a
half of a second difference. Then, they would cut away to crowd shots =
and
when they would return, the sync was close. However, this scene =
repeated
itself no less than 6 times in the first 20 minutes or so. It became so
distracting for me that I changed channels. When I switched to NBC, the
feed was much better and stayed in sync.
