The Selmer 1400 is STILL made to that specification (.590 cylindrical
bore, etc.), plus/minus a few keywork changes and general decay in
build quality. What probably happened in 1957 is that they came out
with the model 1401, with a .577 polycylindrical bore. The 1400
continued in production, though. The music store where I work
continued to buy and rent them until recently, but we have given
up. Our shop is tired of spending so much time correcting factory
defects (loose posts, Ab adjustment screws that completely MISS the A
key, etc.). Too bad, because it is still basically a good horn. I
have two myself, one plastic and one wood (not a nickel's worth of
difference in the sound).

I was working on an F. Barbier clarinet the other day (they were sold
by Selmer). The key sculpting was so distinctive that it was clear
that it was the template for the Bundy keywork to come.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
