Someone before in thread (forgot who) was right that embochure (sp?) is a v=
ery common reasons for squeaks. Here are some other possible reasons:
=A0
Leaks.=A0Since you say it only happens sometimes, maybe a leak caused by a =
loose hinge, only happening sometimes. Maybe a leak as a result from a not =
perfectly seated pad, which only happens when you don't press hard enough (=
which=A0you shouldn't do anyway), and happens more after playing for a whil=
e (your fingers get tired). etc.
=A0
A finger doesn't seal the tone hole. This is most likely for the right hand=
third finger, especially for notes also using the right pinky. The left ha=
nd third finger is also likely. Very common for beginners, and more likely =
to happen after playing a while (your fingers get tired) etc.
=A0
You are hitting other keys. The throat G# key is common and also the top ba=
nana=A0Bb key, sometimes others.=A0Mostly for adult beginners and especiall=
y with big hands and/or wide fingers.
=A0
The best person to solve it is probably a teacher who can actually meet you=
and hear/see you play. If the problem is technical with the instrument, a =
good repairer can find it and fix it.

THANKS for everyone's help...

I ordered a Lyons C clarinet from England.
I don't seem to squeak with it (I have to use a standard Eb reed--not
Legere
that came with it).
I think I am going to send it back although it will cost around $32 to send
back.
I have a 30-day trial.

It is fun to play...but it affects my playing with a standard weight Bb
clarinet.
This clarinet is plastic and very light weight.=20

Hi Clif,=20
=20
What can I do to prevent my clarinet from squeaking and what causes them?=
=20
=20
The most common cause of squeaks in my students over 30+ years of=20
teaching is embouchure. Difficult to describe in words, but; make sure your
chin is=20
pulled down so that the lips aren't bunched up around the reed. Spend a lot

of time in front of a mirror playing long tones and intervals. Keep the
mouth=20
very steady. It shouldn't look like you are chewing while you play. That=20
would indicate that the chin is moving instead of set. Be firm, but never
tight.=20
Do not let any tension in your playing.=20
=20
You may end up seeking out a teacher who can help you with this better=20
than your current teacher.=20
