Gay's method is published in two volumes of about 150 pages each, so
I suspect that the first one you list (without a volume number) is
the second volume of the method. In the early 1970s, Mazzeo had me
start with volume two after working with Baermann 3 for a while (he
remarked it to use the upbeat approach for scales).

The first volume works up to the point of beginning a series of
sections with scales, exercises, etudes, and melodies in specific
keys, starting with with G, e, F, and d. The second volume picks up
from there, starting with D, b, Bb, and g. There's about ten pages of
material in each major key and about five pages for each minor key.
