Subj: RES: [kl] Should have been Rossini Andante, e Tema con Variazioni (not Schubert Octet)

Hi Karl and Gary.
I do not believe on that.
What I think is the 'performance practice' of transpose from C clarinets to
Bb started on Romantic music. So, probably those composers, like Brahms,
know that the clarinetist will, for sure, transpose C clarinet with Bb
clarinets.
But I do believe that Rossini original part could be writen for C clarinet.
But, a good edition could bring both C and Bb parts...

Best,

Fernando

I've always wondered, too, about the low E-flats in the third movement of
Brahms 4th (also written for clarinet in C). It was never a problem when I
used to play it on a B-flat clarinet, but once I bought a C clarinet it
turned into a problem. Did mid-19th century clarinets have an E-flat key on
them?

Must have been too much turkey.

What I meant to say was that in the new edition of the Rossini Andante,
e Tema con Variazioni for flute, clarinet,
bassoon and horn from Baerenreiter the clarinet part is for a C
clarinet. The problem with this is that there is a low E-flat. I wonder
if this is a mistake by the editor. The piece is in F major. Thoughts?
