Was this because he played a German-fingered instrument. I don't
believe I've ever seen an alto with Oehler type fingering; on the
other hand when I was in Wuppertal in the early sixties there were
basset horns in the opera orchestra even then; also at a performance
of the Mozart Requiem I heard in Solingen about the same time.
