It's not _necessarily_ the case that alto clarinets are easier to get
hold of than basset horns. A piece I played recently in Switzerland
with the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Fribourg (Harmonie = wind orchestra)
had an important alto clarinet part, but the player found it easier to
obtain a basset horn.
