The theory has been advanced that Mozarts ORIGINAL intention was for
a contrabassoon but by the time that the work was written he did not
have one available and that the part was therefore written for string
bass. There is no doubt that he specified the string bass, so any
argument that he originally wanted contrabassoon is purely
speculative. However he didn't specify valve horns, boehm clarinets
or Loree oboes either.
If you want to hear the case for the contrabassoon I can give it you,
but I warn you there is no 'proof ' of its validity as far as I know.
As a contra player I wish there were.
