Hi,

In my marching band days (southside Virginia, back before the Flood), we
cut the underside of the fingertips out of our cotton gloves as well.

One thing that might alleviate the cold would be to get some silk glove
liners, cut them in the same way, and wear them underneath the uniform
gloves. I bought some from Land's End or LL Bean some 20 years ago. They
are very thin and should fit easily under another pair of gloves. The silk
provides a bit of extra insulation.

I just did a quick Google search for "silk glove liners", and it looks
like they are still going strong on the market.

Best of luck.
Anna
