I've found that organizing by instrumentation has helped- then I have a
rough starting point for finding what I need. I do not have everything
in a database- but I do have pieces in groups by instrumentation and
then alphabetized by composer so nothing is too hard to find. I haven't
done this for my piano music though.... That's on a bookshelf roughly
organized by genre.... very roughly- but they're easily visible :)
