Sometime in the early sixties, McGinnis & Marx published my set of saxophone
duets titled "Barefoot Dances." They sold fairly well, and for perhaps ten
years there were royalty checks. Then suddenly the checks stopped. Some
time later, there was a letter to my wife that obviously made the assumption
that I had died. I wrote to, I believe, Mrs. Marx and explained that I was
still alive and wondering what had happened to the royalties. There
followed an unsatisfactory exchange of letters. Then I began getting
letters from saxophone players asking how they could get copies of my duets.
They claimed that the work was out of print. Telephone calls to McGinnis &
Marx. The man in charge (whose name I can't recall) assured me that the
work was still in print. Nevertheless, music stores were not able to order
copies. I have no idea what is going on with the company -- if anything.
For years now, whenever musicians write to me complaining about not being
able to get the duets, I simply mail them a photo copy. It has been very
frustrating, and I have the impression that nobody is minding the store.
