Many clarinettists can reed C clarinet parts on the Bb (if you can't
it is a very useful skill to practise). Often they don't realise that
the same transposition enables them to play basset horn parts on the
alto - or F horn parts come to that. In fact an alto is also useful
for reading Bass clef parts; just drop them an octave. Viola parts
can be played on Bb by reading as Bass clef. Of course you need to
add 2 sharps or subtract 2 flats.
