Subj: [kl] Alternatives to bassoon for a quintet?
Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 21:09:29 -0500

I've substituted for an absent viola in a string quartet, since the
clef/transposition is trivial. It does take a bit of creativity to
mimic pizzicato, but it can be done. . . .

So . . . no reason a cello can't go the other way, though the player
will have to listen to a fair amount of bassooning to find the bad
notes on the bundle of sticks and play them dull (or extra-loud) and
out of tune the way the bassoonists do. ;-)
