Mainly because they have very different sounds, because of the bore
difference. A medium bore BH is narrower than an alto clarinet. A wide bore
basset horn IS and alto clarinet! A quartet with BH sounds different from
one with alto, and it depends on what the composer wants.

A subsidiary reason might be that the basset horn gets lower notes because
of the basset extension; though with a bass clarinet in an ensemble, this
doesn't seem necessary.

Subject: [kl] Basset horn vs. Alto Clarinet

Just a quick question...

With any modern clarinet music, mostly ensemble works, why would a
composer decide to write in a basset horn and not an alto clarinet or
vise versa?
I have my thoughts on the matter, but would like to hear from the
masses on this.

Thanks

Edward Escobar
