Dr. Sy Brandon,
I am a teen student and I had the opportunity of working with Dr. Adam
Ballif at Mesa State during a Best of the West Honor Band last year. I
just wanted to throw that in because I think it is neat how small the
music world really is. You don't see student basketball players doing
personal clinics with the Michael Jordans of the world, and yet all
musicians have opportunities to work with "famous", or rather very
talented and well-known musicians. Not dissing on althetics of
course.... Anyways, I will probably be purchasing some music on that
website, thanks!
In the next couple weeks I will be starting a Clarinet Choir with some
fellow high schoolers. Does anyone have any suggestions for fun
ensemble pieces that are relatively easy but sound good? And has anyone
else had the opportunity of listening to the Budapest Clarinet Quintet?
I got to see them live a few years ago and they are my inspiration. :)
Also, one more thing - We are doing the musical Crazy For You this year.
I am in the pit orchestra and I have to play flute, picc, clarinet, sop
and alto sax.... as you can imagine it's a little hectic making sure I
get all my parts practiced. Do any of you find that doubling (or in my
case quin-troubling) makes your clarinet embouchure slacken a bit? It
feels like I have to practice my clarinet twice as much just to keep my
embouchure the way I want it.

>I would like to invite you to check out my composition “Regal Variations”
>for flute and clarinet. This piece was composed during 2008 for the
>Ballif Duo, consisting of Kristi Ballif, flute and Adam Ballif, clarinet.
>It was premiered by them on Nov. 5, 2008 at Mesa State College in Grand
>Junction, CO. The inspiration for the work was Edward Elgar’s “Enigma
>Variations”. Elgar created a marvelous set of variations that treat the
>theme symphonically by varying the motivic ideas instead of just keeping
>the form of the theme constant and building the variations on that
>structure. The result is a set of variations that are connected, yet
>varied in mood. “Regal Variations” is smaller in both instrumentation and
>the number of variations, but it tries to capture the symphonic quality of
>Elgar’s work. The title is an anagram of Elgar’s name.
