>>Yep, that is what would happen. My wife is facing that dilemma
now. We moved, and her years of elementary school teaching
experience and Master's degree in counselling have locked her out of
any possible school job in the area. She can't even get an interview.<<

Bill, tell your wife I sympathize, BTDT. My school laid off **60** people
in the early 90s, and I was the ripe old age of 32. With 10 years of
experience, I could not get a job interview anywhere except at private
schools and in Philly. I have gone in on leads in districts where friends
worked, and they would tell me that the districts never hired anyone any
more with more than 2-3 years of experience.

The only district in the entire southeast PA area who WANTS experienced
people is Philadelphia. No one else wants to pay for experience. Philly
would rather have experienced people, to them, commitment means that the
teacher isn't going to cut and run when the going gets tough. That's if
they can stand the heat in the first place....you know you're out of your
league when you're sitting at a red light, and one of your 7th graders pulls
up as the Driver of the car next to you......
