Unfortunately, one reason for that is how the musicians were
[under]compensated for their efforts.

There are *plenty* of orchestras out there where the players don't have
tenure, and are paid little or nothing. Curiously, those that pay well and
*have* a tenure system tend to sound a whole lot better. Perhaps there
might be a cause and effect relationship at work?
