I don't see how it's any more valid to paint Americans with the same brush
than it is "old" people.

So no, Alexander Brash, I don't know "How many times have I been to the New
York Phil or Boston Symphony and heard players who have held those chairs
for years and years sound embarrassingly unprepared or terrible?" But
proposing to solve this perceived problem with a blanket rule is silly,
unfair, and so forth (Dan has the best list here). And of course, it's
silly to think that you could somehow make the top five orchestras adopt the
same rule (is there a top-five orchestra association? - and what is the top
five list anyway?).

Rules like this are ways of avoiding dealing with a specific situation head
on. How much easier to say, "Sorry, the rules say you must retire" than "We
noticed your playing not up to snuff lately so we're going to move you down
to second chair." This is cowardly and chicken*** (it doesn't even rate
bull***).

And, Tony, it seems a bit presumptive to think that we're all going to
change our spots because we've elected a different president. The past
thirty years has seen the country deeply divided - you've seen a slight
shift that allowed us to elect someone "from the other side." I suspect
most of the Americans you deal with are from that same other side.

And, what does 'play circles round' mean, anyway?

It's all part of this CRAP, PRESENTATION MODEL of what being a
musician is. VERY American in style.

Perhaps you're all going to change, now. I certainly hope so.
