What you see and hear are basset horns, in their period angled shape (they
are more often straight nowdays).

Regarding the trombones, the Requiem includes a bass trombone, on this
instrument, the length of the arm would not
be sufficient to give the slide the extension required by the range of the
instrument. The rod makes in possible
to extend the arm's reach by some centimeters. Nowdays, bass trombone have
valves that enable to increase the
length of the tube without using the slide.
