I think you are getting a bit 'hung-up' on reeds. I've always found
that if I buy a box of Van Doren3's there is always one I can use
straight off and at least half a dozen others that will respond to a
bit if treatment. It is salutory to reed Archie Camden's story on
bassoon reeds in which he tells of a young player producing a great
sound on a reed he would have dismissed as unplayable. That said I
know of one player who produces great results with sopranino sax
reeds, although that "shouldn't work" either. If you can't find any
reeds you like make some; they should be a doddle compared with oboe
or bassoon reeds yet most pro's on both instruments seem to make
their own, at least in UK.
