Do you insist on a wooden clarinet? If not Jon Packer does rather a
nice intermediate model which should come in at well under your budget.
If you want wood it is worth while investigating an Amati. They do
not have the best of reputations but one of my ex pupils has one and
I was surprised at how good it was. I suspect they may be very
variable in quality so you would have to "test-drive " a few. I have
an Amati G (german fingering) and it is a very well-made instrument
but I have come across some awful instruments of theirs too, so try
before you buy but don't dismiss them out of hand; they do produce
some excellent instruments. I think the suggestion of a better
mouthpiece should not be dismissed out of hand; I was amazed at the
difference one made on my bass.
