What instrument is he playing now?
What does his teacher/band director say?
Would a new mouthpiece (a less costly investment by far) serve him better
for now.
As for auction sites, they are always risky, even if you think you know what
you're getting.
A $500 investment at auction might turn out to be a lucky move, but it also
might end up costing you more for new pads or other adjustments. There are
some well-meaning technicians out there who sell clarinets after they've
overhauled them. But the overhaul may not be up to snuff.
Are you near a decent music store that sells good used clarinets and stands
behind its work?
More questions than answers, I know.
There are some on-line dealers who buy used clarinets, repair them and sell
them. I've used one such dealer. The clarinets were good but one of them
needed a bit of retrofitting to make it playable. Other than that, it was a
very good deal.
The Web site is musicremasters.com. But I would try someone local first, if
you can.
Some of the big Web sites, like Woodwind Brasswind (wwbw.com), and Prowind,
have deals from time to time. You'll be getting a new or demo model.

I think my son is ready to "step-up" to a better horn than what he is
playing now. The problem is that money is really really tight. I am afraid
to try e-bay since you never quite know what you are going to get there. I
am looking to pay about $500, preferably less, much less if I can.
TIA,
Patricia Bandy-Smith
