Subj: Fw: [kl] Clarinet playing after gum surgery?
Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2008 12:21:59 -0400

With respect to the inquiries about clarinet playing after surgery, I
already mentioned my own four-quadrant gum surgery in an earlier note,
saying that it took about 3-4 weeks before I could play again.

What I neglected to say was that I think my sound improved when I started
playing again, and I attribute that to the fact that the surgery has, as its
main purpose, the rasing of the gum lines so as to expose more tooth
material and eliminate the decay of the bone mass into which the teeth are
anchored.

I'm not sure how the sound of a clarinet is affected by the total aggregate
area of tooth surfaces, but if it is, that would explain why I felt an
improvement in my sound. On the other hand, what the hell do I know about
this matter?
