Forgive me for contradicting you, but the Baermanns were not brothers. They
were father and son. It was the father who played clarinet and the son who
played basset horn.

They also made great strudel!!

James

Why don't you ask a basset horn player in the UK to play that part while you
play the clarinet?

(hint)

Yes they were for the Baermann brothers, in exchange for cooking dumplings.

Hello listers,

I'm new to this list and have read the recent threads with interest.

With Mendelssohn's bi-centenary coming up, it has been suggested to me that
I learn the concert pieces for clarinet and basset horn to play with a
friend. I'm going to have them brailled and get learning, but I wondered if
anyone can shed any light on why Mendelssohn wrote them and whether they
were for the Behrmann brothers (sorry, not sure of the speling).

I'm sadly not in possession of a basset horn, so also wondering if anyone in
the UK could point me towards places where I might hire one and suggest what
is a reasonable price.

Thanks for any comments you have.

Cheers, James
