Hi Adam,
It's a small world. I met Jimmy Abato in 1950 through my uncle, Sammy Spears, who was the conductor and music director
for the Jackie Gleason Show in New York City. Jimmy was playing lead alto and my saxophone teacher, Sid Cooper was the
2nd alto player. Shortly thereafter I auditioned for Julliard as a clarinet major. I don't remember anyone else but Jimmy Abato
in the audition room, but I was accepted as a Duques student. I vividly remember Jimmy Abato playing lead alto on the
tune, "Tenderly" when Gleason did his "Poor Soul" bit. Gorgeous sound, played pp with amazing control. It's still in my head.
Good luck with your project.
