He was both; though actually a much better pianist than clarinettist.
He was a clarinettist in the NYO with me, and then did all three --
clarinet, piano and conducting -- to about the same extent as a
student in Cambridge; though when I went there he was concentrating
much more on piano and conducting.

He was always a mover and shaker, founding the University Chamber
Orchestra and then, professionally, the London Sinfonietta, moving
into the mainstream repertoire as a staff conductor at Covent Garden
and then into the orchestral scene.

He hasn't had the success that he musically deserves, in my opinion,
being inclined to rub people up the wrong way.
