Are you thinking of David Atherton, who was SD
SO are the early 80's. He was English but a pianist, not a clarinetist

That's not it, but it's close. It was just before David Peck got there.
And when he did get there, the orchestra folded. So who was the English
conductor/clarinet player at that time???

Even if I knew the name, I have lousy memory right now, and it's getting
worse.

Dan,
Here are some names to perhaps to jog your memory.
Yaov Talmi was the conductor at the time San Diego went bankrupt in 1996.  I
believe David Peck was principal clarinet at that time.
