Oh yes. I was familiar with his history. Lots of clarinet players conduct,
including Tony Pay, Alan Balter, the conductor of the San Diego Symphony
(whose name esacapes me and he may not be there any longer), and others. I
was simply intrigued that he was to take part in a chamber work, not in a
clarinet solo.

I think he is also to do K. 622 with a basset clarinet, but on a different
program.

I was simply trying to bring the man to the attention of the clarinet
players who may not have known about him.

Dan, did you look into his history?
From Wikipedia:
Osmo Vänskä (born 28 February 1953 Sääminki, Finland) is a Finnish orchestra
conductor.  He started his musical career as an orchestral clarinettist with
the Turku Philharmonic (1971-1976).  He then became the principal clarinet
of the Helsinki Philharmonic from 1977 to 1982. ........

Vanska is the music director of the Minnesota Orchestra who is going to
conduct the Mostly Mozart Festival orchestra.  One of the works to be done
in the Mozart c minor octet and Vanska is going to play clarinet in it.  See
today's NY Times, page B1.

Let's hear it for the clarinet player!!
