One must always remember, that in strictly correct English (I can't speak
for American) that male embraces female, and thus

The pupil at the co-ed school put his clarinet away. You can find out the
gender of the pupil later.

Of course if you were to use "their" then you'd be implying more than one
pupil..... And sharing a clarinet isn't fun!
