I think your are looking at this backwards. It should read, "If you
like an open mouthpiece, you probably need a softer reed." It is
much easier to change reeds to fit a mouthpiece than hunt for a
mouthpiece that matches your reeds. Jazz playing generally demands a
more open facing; classical playing calls for a closer facing, just
like with clarinet. Buy reeds provide the feel and sound you like
from whatever mouthpiece you settle on (or two varieties for two
different pieces if you play multiple styles).
