David Glenn asks about this doubling; I've done it a couple of times, and a=
s I recall, the Eb is by far the more prominent part, so I favoured that an=
d only switched to bass where it was exposed. I remember that towards the m=
iddle or end of the piece there are=A0a couple of arias with *long* held to=
nes in the bass (like semi-breves) that are sort of solo-ish. There was a b=
it of challenge in figuring out where to breathe, to both keep going physic=
ally, but not disrupt the musical line. I always enjoy roasting the swan on=
Eb, but get together with the piccolo player first to sort out the long un=
