I had the great good luck Saturday evening to attend a
concert by the Baermann Clarinet Sextet in Paris at
the Eglise Reformee de Port Royal. I just happened to
be staying two doors away and noticed the poster
advertising the concert a couple of days ago. The
sextet (Alain Fernandes, Pierre Sacchetti, Eric
Lambeger, Florence Favrau, Olivier Voize, and Marc
Boutillot). They did a program that followed almost
exactly the sequence of their CD "Kiosque" (Polymni
POL 590 148) and that included Handel, Katchaturian,
Mendelssohn, Jaubert, Mozart ("final de la Gran
Partita K361), J. Strauss, Morton Gould, and Astor
Piazzola. They also did a Bulgarian folkdance
preceded and followed by a remarkable improvisation
from Marc Boutillot on bass clarinet. Boutillot also
improvised ably on their arrangement of Piazzola's
"Oblivion." A varied, brilliant program, wonderfully
performed.
