I think the reason that some things are rental is that the demand is low
and it is expensive to create parts. I am pretty sure that many rentals
are copies of hand written parts and scores. I got the scores for the
Shostakovich Ballet Suites a number of years ago and that was what they
were. The scores had been made by an older copying technology and bound
(I can't remember exactly how) by hand.
