Kevin Fay's posting on the matter of what and what not may be permitted with
respect to copying parts reminds me of a story that Mazzeo told me. He was
the personnel manager but had his finger on most of the stuff going on in
the BSO. One night, at a public concert, authorities showed up, stopped the
concert in mid allegro, so to speak, and took all of their music off the
music stands, thereby cancelling the whole evening.

Apparently, the BSO was notorious for copying music so that the next time
they did it, they did not have to pay for a second rental. Bad idea. Their
concerts were, of course, well advertised, so some angry music publishers
knew that they were performing a work for which the BSO had not paid the
necessary fees. Copying be damned, the publisher was not getting its fee and
the copyright holder was not gettting his or her fee.

In essence, the publishers really don't care if you copy their stuff as long
as they get their legitimate fees, some of which is, of course, transferred
over to the composer through ASCAP and other organizationss.

Things changed very rapidly for the BSO beginning by the time of the next
concert.
